Main Causes of Shoulder Pain

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rotator cuff arthropathy
  • Frozen shoulder

Osteoarthritis

  • Pain is localized around the shoulder and upper arm.
  • Activity makes the pain worse, whereas rest and heat provide some relief.

  • present on physical examination.

Rotator cuff arthropathy

  • Disorders of the rotator cuff, ranging from tendon inflammation to rupture, are a common source of anterior shoulder pain.
  • Pain that is worse during activities that involve your arm being above shoulder level – for example, when brushing your hair
  • Pain when you move your arm in an arc away from your body
  • Pain at night

Frozen Shoulder (Adhesive Capsulitis)
Frozen shoulder is a painful persistent stiffness of the shoulder joint that makes it very difficult to carry out the full range of normal shoulder movements It makes difficult to carry out everyday tasks such as dressing, driving and sleeping comfortably. Some people are unable to move their shoulder at all

Acromioclavicular Joint Pain
A patient with acromioclavicular joint dysfunction frequently complains of pain when reaching across the chest.

Subdeltoid Bursitis
Repeated strain from throwing injuries, bowling, carrying a heavy briefcase, working with the arm raised across the body may result in inflammation of the subdeltoid bursa.

The patient suffering from subdeltoid bursitis frequently complains of pain with any movement of the shoulder, but especially with abduction.

Biceps Tendinitis
The most common symptom is pain in the anterior shoulder that may radiate to the biceps muscle and worsen with overhead activities. Patients often report significant nighttime pain. the most common finding is point tenderness in the bicipital groove.
